- Heat oil in a large, heavy saucepan over medium heat. Add tomatoes and garlic; cook 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add bay leaf, beans, broth and sausage. Reduce heat to medium-low; cover and simmer 20 minutes or until sausage is no longer pink. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Using the back of a spoon, mash some of the garbanzos against sides of saucepan to thicken stew. Remove and discard bay leaf.
