Ice Cream, National Ice Cream Month
The weather is hot, but this treat is cold … ice cream! July celebrates Ice Cream Month and is perfectly timed since ice cream is great for summertime.
When it comes to ice cream, there are plenty of options! From vanilla and chocolate to cookies and cream, mint chip, cookie dough, and plenty of other fun flavors, there is an ice cream that even the pickiest eater is sure to enjoy!
Ice cream also comes in a variety of options to meet any dietary need. While traditional dairy ice cream is most popular, there are many dairy free options including coconut milk based frozen treats as well as low calorie options that fit into most meal plans.
So how much ice cream should we eat? One serving of ice cream is 1/2 cup – yes, 1/2 cup as in 4 ounces or a 1/2 cup standard measuring cup. While this serving size may seem small compared to the larger bowls sold at ice cream parlors, ice cream can be part of a healthy meal plan when consumed in small amounts, in moderation.
As a registered dietitian and foodie, I would much rather have a smaller portion of a real ice cream made compared to eating a full pint of a lower calorie option. Eating traditional ice cream that is higher in fat and calories contains more flavor and can be more satisfying. The ice cream you choose is up to you, but remember serving size to keep ice cream as a part of a balanced diet!
To make the 1/2 cup serving size of ice cream more filling, try pairing ice cream with fresh or canned in 100% juice fruits! The fruit is a source of fiber which helps us feel full and when adding fruit to your ice cream, your small bowl becomes a little bigger.
If you like to be in the kitchen, you can always try making your own ice cream either just for fun or to make a healthier version! Here are recipes for traditional ice cream and a lighter version that is still sure to please.
