Winner, Winner, Soup is for Dinner!
Throughout the year – and especially during the cold, dreary winter months – soup is a go-to meal for many families. The options are endless, and all of them are delicious.
Which is why, to celebrate the introduction of the Our Family® brand in our Michigan stores, our parent company SpartanNash held the Our Family is Souper! recipe contest. Cooks of all levels were asked to send in their favorite soup recipes during the month of January – and we received hundreds of recipes for mouth-watering soups, stews, bisques and chilis.
On Saturday, Feb. 24, we crowned the grand prize winner of the Our Family is Souper! contest – and now, we’re ready to share the award-winning recipe so you can make it at home.
Teresa Fiocchi’s Fiocchi Family Pasta e Fagioli was inspired by a family favorite soup, from a local Italian café in their hometown in Illinois. After moving to Michigan in 2017, Teresa and her family were reminiscing about their favorite foods from restaurants ‘back home,’ and Teresa decided to try to recreate the soup using ingredients she had in the house.
After switching out several of the original ingredients with Our Family products, this version had all the flavors and texture of the soup that her family had been missing!
As the grand prize winner of the Our Family is Souper! recipe contest, Teresa received $2,500 in free groceries, with the Food Bank of South Central Michigan receiving $2,500 in Our Family product.
You can find the ingredients for the Fiocchi Family Pasta e Fagioli at your nearest Dan's Supermarket or add them all to your next Fast Lane order by shopping the collection, available now on
Fiocchi Family Pasta e Fagioli
1 lb. lean ground beef
1 cup diced onions
1 cup diced carrots
1 cup diced celery
2 minced garlic cloves
1 tablespoon Our Family tomato paste with basil, oregano and garlic
1-½ teaspoons salt
½ teaspoons crushed black pepper
1 teaspoon oregano
1 teaspoon basil
½ teaspoon thyme
1 tablespoon vinegar
2 (14.5 ounce) cans Our Family diced tomatoes (no salt added)
1 (15 ounce) can Our Family tomato sauce
4 cups Our Family 100% vegetable juice
1 (15.5 ounce) can Our Family light red kidney beans
1 (15.5 ounce) can Our Family great northern beans
½ lb. (2 cups uncooked) Our Family macaroni shells
Our Family Italian blend cheese (optional)
Our Family twisted garlic bread sticks (optional)
Brown ground beef in a large stockpot over medium heat. Drain off any fat. Add onions, carrot, celery and garlic. Sauté for 6-8 minutes.
Add Our Family tomato paste along with salt, pepper oregano, basil and thyme. By letting tomato paste “brown” in the pan and sautéing it with the spices, you can boost the flavor of the soup. Sauté for an additional 6-8 minutes.
Deglaze the bottom of the pan with vinegar, scraping any bits from the bottom of the pan. Add Our Family diced tomatoes, Our Family tomato sauce and Our Family vegetable juice. Bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer. Drain both Our Family light red kidney beans and Our Family great northern beans and add to stockpot. Simmer for 1 hour.
While soup is simmering, bring 4 quarts of water to a rapid boil. Add 2 teaspoons of salt. Gradually add 2 cups of Our Family macaroni shells to boiling water. Stir gently and return to a rapid boil. Cook macaroni shells uncovered for 8 minutes or until al dente. Drain well.
Add Our Family macaroni shells to stockpot and simmer 10 minutes.
Of the hundreds of soup recipes received, 10 semifinalists advanced to an online voting period and were partnered with a local food pantry, reinforcing SpartanNash’s commitment to building local relationships and fighting hunger in the communities it serves. The top five finalists selected by popular vote advanced to the judged tasting of their soup recipes, with Teresa named the grand prize winner.
