New Year, New Brews!

new beer selections at Family Fare

We wanted to let you know about some of the exciting new beer items coming to Family Fare this Spring!  We received 184 new beer submissions for the 2018 beer season, however we can only pick up about 35 of them.   It was a huge showdown with each new item fighting for space on the shelf!  Below I show off some of the mouth-watering selections we made.

One of the largest projected winners for 2018 is Solid Gold, a new premium lager from Founders - it will be huge.  A lager yeast with lemon drop hops, the ABV is only 4.4 and the IBUs are 20.  This mouth-watering gem goes great with sushi, sesame seed tuna, and arugula salad with oil and lemon.

Another great beer company, Bell’s, is delivering Lager of the Lakes in a can.  Using German and Czech Republic grown noble hops that impart cedar and spice, it’s mixed into a Pils malt that delivers a light toasted grain and a light body.  Pairs with seafood dishes like calamari, or any dish that has cilantro, dill, or basil.

The skyrocketing category of spiked seltzer water offers new items as well.  Truly Spiked and Sparkling Berry will be on our shelves as a variety 12pk.  Four cans, (yes, cans!)  of three flavors like Wild Berry, Blueberry/Acai, and Raspberry/Lime are sure to be big winners this year.  Cans are hot for this category - they go anywhere, especially when glass is not wise.  Only 5% ABV, 100 calories, 1 gram of sugar, and gluten-free.

New to Michigan from Oregon is 10 Barrel Joe IPA, at 6.9% ABV with 70 IBUs.  This IPA has a bright, citrusy flavor and intense hop aroma.  Originally this beer was named SAM for the hops:  Simcoe, Amarillo, and Mosaic, but was met with a potential trademark issue.  The names Bob, Tom, Dick, Dan, Carl, and Frank did not work.  The name JOE worked.  Pairs well with seared pork chops or sausage pizza.

New in Michigan and only in select stores, is a new IPA from Stormcloud located in Frankfort, Michigan named Whiled Away IPA, at 6.7% ABV with 70 IBU; it lays atop Continental Pilsner with Munich malt.  Predominant hops are Columbus, Centennial, and Cascade.  Pair with any sweet/spicy dish.
One of my favorite new beers is SeaQuench, a sour from Dogfish Head at 4.9% ABV with 10 IBUs.  It has 140 calories and 9 grams of carbs.  This is a real thirst-quenching drink.  It has sea salt and lime built into sour structures that provide a clean finish.  Pairs best with seafood, sushi, or fish tacos.  My mouth is watering!

The cider category has an interesting wine crossover with Strongbow Rosé Cider. Rosé wines have significant growth; they are flowering into other categories.  Strongbow Rosé Cider is semi-dry with a touch of red-fleshed apple, at 50% less sugar than its competitor.  Light and refreshing, it pairs well with light pasta or rice dishes, as well as seafood dishes.
