Every Kid Healthy Week is celebrated April 23rd-27th; a week dedicated to promoting the health and wellness of kids at school, home, and in the community. Healthy kids are better prepared to learn, which is why it is so important to encourage nutritious food and physical activity.
There are many ways to get involved in Every Kid Healthy Week. Take action and ask what your child’s school is doing to promote health and wellness in the classroom, during physical education, and in the lunchroom. Encourage your school to participate in Every Kid Healthy Week with these ideas:
- Have a veggie planting day! Many vegetables can be started in toilet paper holders prior to being planted in the ground. Stand toilet paper holders upright on a baking sheet, pack with planting soil and plant 2-3 seeds in the middle of the soil (read the seed package for exact instructions). Place baking sheet next to a window and cover with plastic wrap, seeds need to stay warm and moist, for 4-6 weeks or until the first green stem pops out of the soil. Students can then take their plant home and transfer to an outdoor garden. There is no need to remove the plant from the toilet paper holder; it will break down in the soil as the vegetable grows.
- Encourage the physical education teacher to partner with a local YMCA or gym to bring in an exercise teacher to guest host a kids Zumba class or personal trainer to set up an obstacle course.
- Put up large pieces of paper in the lunch room highlighting different fruits and vegetables and allow kids to vote for their favorite.
Make an impact and create healthy kids at home too. Visit your local Dan's Supermarket and allow your kids to choose their own healthy snack items like fresh fruits and veggies, string cheese, and peanut butter. At home, prepare snacks together in the kitchen. Kids are more likely to eat healthy foods when they are involved. Be physically active as a family on this particular week by finding kid friendly exercise videos on YouTube, have a plank challenge in the living room, or practice yoga by balancing on one foot.
Your community is a great resource when it comes to health and wellness. As the weather warms up, you can often find fun runs to participate in as a family, organized nature walks, youth sports sign-ups, community garden planting, and more!
